WHAT TO DO IN Staunton Area plus Dining Guide

WHAT TO DO IN STAUNTON and the area:

If you like Antiquing then this area abounds with good places to hunt for something special.  We have a brochure of places right in town – about 10-12 shops and 2 malls.  In the larger area, there is a wonderful Route 11 guide to Antique shops and many are within about a 25 miles range from Staunton.

If you like hiking then the Blue Ridge Parkway is only about 20 minutes drive from the cottage.  Going south is “free” and going north you enter the Shenandoah National Park for a fee.  There are many trails starting from the Parkway.  Great views too.  It is a SLOW drive – about 35 miles per hour so if you decide to drive to Staunton on some of the parkway, be aware that it takes a long time.

There are lots of sites to see locally – The Frontier culture Museum, the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace, Polyface farm, Stonewall Jackson’s house in Lexington, the George Marshall Museum at VMI and of course near Charlottesville there is Monticello – about 45 minutes from the cottage. A little further afield there are some battlefields (Newmarket to name one) and Green valley Books which has fabulous sales every month or 2.

Horse Riding is another option with a local stable offering rides most days.  Monterey is not far, and also Warm Springs for a beautiful trip through the mountains.

Last but not least, we have 4 coffee shops in town – all making great drinks – hot or cold.  Get our map of town which shows where the restaurants and sites are for your convenience.
